May 2024 Weekly Update 2

2. Rosi Braidotti – Necropolitics and Ways of Dying

2019

Braidotti intensely and dramatically criticizes the overuse of the concept of the Anthropocene, arguing that it obscures more grounded and worldly studies. By examining the Anthropocene’s issues as the apocalyptic lament of the white man, Braidotti proposes posthumanism as the antidote. She emphasizes that lamenting achieves nothing, but taking action will.

Her strong critique reminds me of the feeble works done by Eleana Kim. As an anthropologist who emphasizes non-humancentic perspectives, Kim exemplifies the kind of scholar who obscures human lives while focusing on the ecology, for example, well-being of birds. The study appears even more feeble when Kim defends herself by claiming that certain more human-centered perspectives are impossible to study in the DMZ.

4. Rosi Braidotti: What is the Human in the Humanities Today?

2018

In this 2018 critique, similar to the 2019 one, Braidotti makes harsh criticisms of various posthuman studies. First, she defines the subjects studied by contemporary posthuman research, then she highlights the capitalized aspects of such research. Finally, she directs attention to what was preciously obscured.

  • seperation

6. Being Dead Otherwise - Anne Allison
